A year with a bouncer: what wears out and what to wash

20 September 2026 · HKAI

A frame lasts. Fabric does not. After twelve months of daily use the difference between a tired seat and a finished one is usually thirty five dollars of fabric.

I bought the HKAI bouncer but I have a preemie so I wanted more support. I’m glad I bought this insert, it works well! There is a velcro spot for a headrest but this insert doesn’t come with one and I don’t see one available to purchase, at least not from the same brand, which I find odd. There is one picture showing a headrest but nope.

One owner of ours reported the frame sagging with heavy use across two children, and we print that review on the product page rather than hiding it. It is the one failure that a spare part does not fix.

Washing the fabric

  • Take the cover off the frame completely. Washing it on the frame soaks the metal and the joints.
  • Cold machine wash, gentle cycle, no bleach and no softener. Softener kills the grip of the mesh.
  • Air dry flat. A tumble dryer shrinks the sling and it will no longer stretch over the frame.
  • Wipe the frame with a damp cloth and dry it before the cover goes back on.

When a spare part beats a new seat

If the frame is straight and the harness still locks, fabric is the only thing between you and a seat that looks new. A pad and a bar together cost a fraction of the cheapest seat in our range.

If the frame sags under a baby who used to sit high, that is the end of it. No pad corrects a frame that has lost its shape, and stacking a thicker pad on top makes the recline shallower than it should be.

The wash cycle that ruins a sling

Hot water and a tumble dryer are what finish a cover, not the baby. The sling is cut to stretch over the frame under tension, and heat shrinks it by a few percent.

A few percent is enough. The cover goes back on with a fight, then sits tighter than it should, and the recline angle changes because the fabric no longer gives.

Cold, gentle, air dry flat. If it has already happened, stretching the damp cover over the frame and letting it dry in place recovers some of it.

What a year of use costs

Our own arithmetic, from the prices on this site and the months a seat is usable. It is the number we would want before buying.

Our own arithmetic, from the prices on this site. Months of use assume 7 months as a bouncer, the point at which most babies sit up unaided, and 24 months for the one model that carries on as a toddler chair.

The spare parts change the shape of that table. A pad and a bar together cost less than the cheapest seat in the range, so a frame that is still straight is worth keeping.

The second hand question

A bouncer passed down from a cousin is usually fine, with two checks. Look at the harness webbing where it meets the buckle, and press down hard on the middle of the sling with both hands.

If the webbing is frayed or the sling touches the floor under pressure, the seat has done its work. Fabric you can replace. A tired frame you cannot.
